Meet Summer Intern - Gabby Hillis

Gabby will graduate next Spring from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation. Gabby is a passionate environmentalist. She believes that in regards to our environmental crisis, we (people) are the problem and therefore the solution. Gabby also a firm believer in the notion that sustainable ecotourism is the best way to save the planet. “Get people connected to nature and educate them on the problems facing it.” She accredits her UF professor and FL SEE board member, Taylor Stein, to this wise perspective.

Gabby is a people person, and is very willing to help FL SEE in any way she can. She is helping organize FL SEE's annual Ecotour Provider Webinar Series and annual meeting happening this October. She is conducting a Certification program audit, and assisting with membership development and social media.

Lastly, Gabby is also a 5th year Division 1 swimmer on the UF swim team. She loves balancing her passions for both sport and the environment.

Become a Coral Reef Ambassador

Florida’s Coral Reef stretches nearly 350 miles from the Dry Tortugas to the St. Lucie Inlet, and it is home to over 500 species of fish, along with many species of turtles and sharks as well. August is a special time of the year, because, around the time of the full moon, corals ensure the survivability of their species by spawning.

While ecologically important, Florida’s Coral Reef is also critical to the economy! Reef-related activities contribute $6.1 billion dollars and support 71,000 jobs annually, and healthy coral reefs also safeguard against extreme weather, shoreline erosion, and coastal flooding.

Although there are multiple stressors affecting our reef resources, the 5 counties along Florida’s Coral Reef developed the Coral Reef Ambassadors program to help residents, tourists, boaters, fishermen and divers understand how they can help conserve and protect our local reefs.
