About The Event

Bats are a mystery in the night to many, but they don’t have to be! Bats play a vital role in the environment, and all species are protected in Florida. Join us to learn about bat biology and ecology, common myths and misconceptions about bats, legal protections, dealing with unwanted bats, bat house building, habitat management, and how you can help support bats. 


Presenter: Dr. Shelly Johnson, PhD, is the State Specialized Agent in Natural Resources with IFAS Extension and the UF Department of Wildlife Ecology & Conservation. Dr. Johnson has expertise in wildlife ecology and habitat management, with years of field experience studying bats using capture, telemetry, and acoustics to assess habitat use. She earned her PhD degree from University of Florida by investigating the tradeoffs among wildlife biodiversity, social value, and ecosystem services. She is chair of the Florida Bat Working Group and frequently provides bat outreach programs.
