Florida SEE's 2013 Annual Meeting Enjoys Unprecedented Attendance

John Kiseda

On the last weekend in June, more than 50 participants from all over the state of Florida and beyond gathered in Cocoa Beach for the 13th Annual Ethical Ecotourism Meeting hosted by The Florida Society for Ethical Ecotourism.

Attendees included ecotour providers, destination management directors, educational organization staff, eco-travelers, and Florida Master Naturalist trained citizens.

On the morning of Saturday, June 29th, participants attended various eco-excursions offered by "Florida SEE GOLD Certified" Wildside Tours, the Brevard Zoo, and Space Coast Kayaking.

Speakers included Brad Stombock, Director of the Florida DEP Green Lodging and Clean Marina Programs, Katrina Morrell from the National Association for Interpretation, Joy Hazell from the University of Florida Sea Grant Program, Dr. Scott Taylor from the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program, and Hitesh Mehta from The International Ecotourism Society.

On Sunday morning, two new individuals were elected to the Board of Directors; Wendy Richards of Gainesville and AyoLane Halusky of Jacksonville.

The success of Florida SEE's annual meeting can only be attributed to the spirit of enthusiastic cooperation and generosity demonstrated by the ecotourism community. Over a dozen individuals and organizations donated goods and services to our silent auction fund raiser, and six key sponsors came forward to help with the costs associated with organizing a state-wide conference.  Our most heartfelt thanks go out to these sponsors, who include:

Brevard Nature Alliance
Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program
Space Coast Office of Tourism
Charlotte Harbor Visitor and Convention Bureau
The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel
The Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program

The June 2014 Ethical Ecotourism Meeting will take place in Charlotte County, on Florida's west coast with the help of the Charlotte Harbor Visitor and Convention Bureau.  We hope to see you there!
